Ecclesiastes – Meaningless meaningless everything is meaningless!
In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon the great king talks about how everything is meaningless. He talks about the pleasures of the world – riches, fame, women, fruit of the vine and calls them all worthless and meaningless. From the Bible we know that Solomon, the King, had many wives and concubines. He was a very wise King people from near and far were amazed at his wisdom and the way he ruled that they came to see if all they heard was true. The Bible also talks about one such incident where the queen of Sheba comes to see if what she heard was true and is indeed impressed by Solomon’s wisdom!
The book starts with how vain everything here on earth is. He talks about the the blowing of the wind, the rising and setting of sun, the vanity of wisdom, vanity of self-indulgence, vanity of toil and the whole time he talks about how all these things are just in vain. A king who had it all, after having experienced all the pleasures(so called) of this world says that all of these things are meaningless! He says that we are made from dust and to dust we shall return.
As I read this book something caught my eye! At the very end of this book in chapter 12 the great and wise king says something –
Fear God and keep the commands for God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
This life here on earth makes sense only when lived for God by the standards of God for we were created by Him, for His glory! We need to realize and live with this in mind that, there is going to be a day called the day of Judgement where every little thing be it good or evil is going to be Judged and woe unto me if I have not found favour in God’s sight! Woe unto me if I have not been adopted into God’s family! Woe unto me if I face the Judgement of God without my advocate Jesus pleading my case, satisfying God with His blood, by the finished work on the cross.
I thank God for He chose me in His mercy! I thank God for Jesus who pleads my case. I thank God for He has adopted me into His family. And I thank God for Ecclesiastes and for Solomon the great king who had all the pleasures of this world and still realized that all of this is vanity!
