“Aslan,” said Lucy, “you’re bigger.”
“That is because you are older, little one,” answered he.
”Not because you are?”
”I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”
C.S. Lewis, Prince Caspian
I found this quote at the very beginning of the book ‘Deeper’ and I fell in love with it instantly. This quote is taken from C.S. Lewis’s book Prince Caspian. When Lucy comes face to face with Aslan, the great lion, she mentions that Aslan looks so much bigger than what she had known him to be. To this, Aslan responds that she finds him bigger not because he has changed but because she has grown to know him better.
What a lovely quote begin a book like the book deeper when the book itself is calling people to grow in a deeper understanding of God to see Christian growth?!
This shows me at least two things if not more:
- God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- The greatness of God in our minds is directly proportional to the amount we know Him.
God is the same; He was, is and always will be the same. His being and character does not change; not one bit. He is as big as he was at the creation of the world and will be as big on that day when we will see him face to face.
At the same time, we do not get to know this God and His greatness and goodness all at once. We grow into knowing this God. And since this God is so big and there is so much of Him for us to know, we could spend eternity knowing Him.
This one single quote captures so beautifully what I am struggling to put in words.
Today, if we find God small, it is because of the knowledge that we have of Him — little knowledge. Let us strive then, to grow deeper in the knowledge of God so that we can see Him a little bigger today than yesterday.
