Every May we travel to Mangalore to meet my parents. The year 2020 has been different for the whole world and it was different for us as well.
We were unable to travel due to the lockdown. But on the morning of 27th, at breakfast we were discussing that the restrictions have eased now. And that we can travel within the state without much restriction. This quickly led to a decision to visit my parents.
We packed up and were off within 2 hours. We were of course careful. We did not stop except to eat. And we ate what we had packed from our house. And we ate in the car. It was worth it. The grandparents and grandchildren were especially happy to be able to meet each other.
Since we were stuck indoors and since my mom had no clue we were coming. She had not prepared any of her special meals. That gave us the opportunity to try out some ethnic recipes.
I went out to the city and got some ingredients and groceries while the family stayed at home. We ate a lot of seafood. A very mangalorean cusisine.
The kids enjoyed themselves in the open spaces even though it was sweltering. Thankfully, the monsoon set in within a few days and the climate changed. It was a joy to witness the weather change after a decade and a half.
Here are some pics from the trip. It’s Mangalore, so there is also a picture of a snake that was just passing by…
