We are studying the book of Jonah in our weekly Bible study, this week we saw the Sovereignty of God through the book the Jonah.
God is sovereign over everything. This is something that I have heard over and over again. I still remember the very first time I had heard of this, it was way back in 2010 when our church was learning this truth. Since then, I have heard this preached and talked multiple times.
I have no doubt about the sovereignty of God. I believe it with all my heart. He is the master creator and He does His will at all times who is is over the wind and the waters, the oceans and the seas, the high and the low, the mighty and the pauper. He is over all!
In the book of Jonah, we see God sovereign over the following:
The Winds and Seas
God shows that he is sovereign over the winds and the seas. For as long as Jonah was in the boat, the waters were rough and the boat threatened to break. But the moment he was thrown out of the boat, the sea calmed and the boat was at rest! Isn’t that something to consider!
The great big fish
The text clearly says that God appointed a great big fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah stays in the belly of this great fish three days and three nights unharmed! Can you imagine that! Following this, we see God commanding the fish to spit Jonah on dry land and it obeys God!
The plant
God appointed a plant to grow and provide shade to the sulking prophet! I wonder how fast this plant grew. And yes, God can cause plants to grow at His will!
The Worm
God appointed a worm to eat the plant and just like that the plant was destroyed! The plant that was once there, providing shade to the sulking prophet, is now no more!
The East Wind
God caused the east wind to blow and the sun to beat down on the prophet to teach him that He will have mercy on whom He has mercy and compassion on whom He has compassion.
One thing is quite clear from our first look at Jonah, God is sovereign over the wind, the seas, the fish, the plant and the worm. Well, one mighty and powerful God who is sovereign over His creation!
